gravity flow systems which, due to topography or site constraints, must be <br />shallower to maintain minimum slope; unavoidable grade conflicts with existing `~' <br />underground facilities; and site, topography and/or subsurface conditions prohibitive <br />of excavation at standard depth. <br />3. In new residential subdivisions the primary locations for utility placement are in a <br />public utility easement adjacen# to the public right-o#--way and beneath sidewalk <br />locations. Alternate locations may be allowed within the right-of-way if topography <br />or site conditions make use of the primary locations infeasible. Utility lines and <br />structures shall not be located in the planting strip between the curb and sidewalk <br />where they would conflict with street trees. Facilities such as transformers, junction <br />boxes, water meters, and fire hydrants may be placed in the planting strip when <br />necessary so long as they are located between street trees, as close to the <br />property line as possible. . <br />4. No portion of a utility trench within a street may be located closer than one foot <br />parallel to the face of the gutter. Utility trenches in the planting strip may not be <br />located closer than one foot paraNel to the back of the curb. <br />5. Whenever pavement removal within public streets would cause the pavement to be <br />cut within three feet of an existing edge, curb, score, joint, or crack the existing <br />pavement shall be removed to that score, joint, or crack. <br />6. Minimum width of pavemenf cuts shall be three (3) feet in portiand cement concrete <br />streets, alleys, and driveways; and a T trench in asphalt concrete streets which <br />shall be computed as follows: Surface Width of Trench (including sloughing) + One <br />Foot (six inches each side). An acceptable alternative to using the "T' trench is <br />.through the performance of compaction testing by an independent testing lab. if <br />this alternative is selected., frequency of the compaction testing shall be as is <br />currently specified by the: City on'City contract projects. Alternate trenching and <br />backfill methods resulting> in pavement cuts which differ from these standards may <br />be submitted for consideration on a case-by-case basis. <br />Pavement cuts for vacuum #ype excavation shall be no greater than 24" wide for <br />square cuts and no greater than 12" in diameter for round -core cuts. Backfill for <br />vacuum type excavation within or adjacent to paved surfaces shall be controlled <br />density fill (CDF). Surface restoration for vacuum excavation shall conform to <br />requirements of section 3.B.1 for concrete surfaces and 3.B.2 for asphalt surfaces. <br />7. Cutting of existing pavements shall be performed with a rotary saw.
