Federa~Priorities 2007 Education ~pu~i~ic Hea~t~i <br />Fetal alnd Infant Mortality Review <br />in Lane Colunty <br />Request <br />Lane County's Department of Health- and Human Services requests $150,000 to support`Public <br />Health's implementation of a Fetal and Infant Mortality Review process and the ongoing efforts <br />of three collaborative, community-driven fetal-infant mortality task forces vvorking to reduce the <br />fetal-infant mortality rate in Lane County, Oregon. <br />Background _ <br />The incidence of fetal-infant mortality in a community: is measured by-the number of fetal and <br />infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The rate of fetal-infant mortality serves as a measure of a <br />community's social and economic well-being as well as its health. Lane County's overall fetal- <br />. infanfi mortality rate. is .higher than. the .average. of the nation, state of Oregon, and the-three <br />larger Oregon counties by population (Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington). (1999-2003) <br />i <br />Efforts in Lane County. Lane County Public Health and the Public Health Advisory Committee <br />identified the county's high fetal-infant mortality rate as a top community health priority and are <br />~ currently involved in efforts to address this serious problem. As an example of those efforts, <br />Lane County Public Health participated in a year-long fetal-infant mortality .training .program <br />through CityMatCH and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The training program included <br />technical assistance and .support in the perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) approach to increasing <br />the community's understanding of the factors driving the high fetal-infant mortality rate in Lane <br />23 <br />
