2. Prune off all dead, damaged, broken, or frayed roots prior

1 to planting.
2.1.6 Planting
a) Set the tree on undisturbed solid ground in the center of the hole so that
the upper surface of the root ball or the trunk flare is a minimum of 1" and
a maximum of 2" above final grade.
i
b) Set the tree plumb, upright, and faced for best appearance. Prune to

~ remove any damaged or broken branches.
c) Backfill the hole with the original soil. If a trench or other pocket of
non-soil material (gravel, CDF, etc.) has been encountered, such gravel
or other material shall not be used as backfill. For trees supplied with
mycorrhizal fungi and / or hydrogel, backfill the hole half way and then
evenly distribute the pre-measured product supplied on the right and the
left quadrants of the tree (when viewed from the street). While
backfilling, gently firm the soil into place around the root ball. If the tree is
balled and burlapped, cut and pull away any twine. If wires are used
around the ball, cut the wire on the upper 1/3 of the ball and remove or
fold it down. Leave the lower 2/3 of the wire basket in place. Peel the
burlap down 1/3 of the way down the root ball. It will decompose over
time. With container trees, remove the tree from the container and
inspect the roots. If they are tight and circling around the edge of the pot,
take a knife and score several times around the circumference of the root
ball. Continue to add soil while gently tapping it around the roots to
eliminate any air pockets. Add 15 gallons of water immediately, making
sure to do it slowly, so it soaks into the root zone. Add additional water
until the soil is saturated and all air pockets are removed.
d) Mulching- Scrape off any sod, grass, or other vegetation from a 6 foot
diameter circle around the tree. In areas where six feet is not available
between the sidewalk and the curb, the entire area shall be squared off
for a distance of six linear feet centered on the tree. Apply 3 inches of
mulch over the entire area, except for within two inches of the trunk.
e) Irrigation conflicts- Occasionally, the situation will be encountered where
existing irrigation runs down the center of the planting strip, conflicting
with the installation of trees under this agreement. When this occurs, the
contractor shall reroute the irrigation around the planting hole with four 90
degree bends or approved alternative. Contractor shall be compensated
for such rerouting at the price bid for this work in section 3.1.2
2.1.7 Watering Basin
In order to direct water to the roots, create a continuous 3 inch high raised
berm at a radius of 3 feet around the tree. If the space available is less
than 3 feet, make the radius of the berm as big as possible.
2.1.8 Staking
2006200043 Page 5
