b) Bare root trees: <br /> i <br /> Dig a shallow, broad tree planting hole at least 1' wider than the spread of <br /> the roots to allow the roots sufficient area. The hole shall have sufficient <br /> depth to allow the trunk flare to be a minimum of 1" and a maximum of 2" <br /> 'i above final grade. Root flare must be visible after planting for <br /> acceptance. Leave a mound in the center of the hole. Drape and <br /> spread the roots in their natural position over the mound. <br /> Score the edge of the hole to leave the edges rough and not smooth. <br /> This is to encourage rooting into the existing soil: <br /> c) If a stump remnant, significant old root material, or other material <br /> prevents planting, the <br /> contract administrator shall be contacted for an alternative location at the <br /> same address. The City shall attempt to avoid such conflicts and the <br /> Contractor shall contact the administrator only after attempting to <br /> address the obstruction. This may include cutting up to four inch <br /> diameter woody material. <br /> d) The new planting may be a replacement of a failed earlier project <br /> planting. Any remaining wire basket, burlap, and or root mass will need <br /> to be removed if encountered. <br /> i <br /> 2.1.5 Planting -General Conditions <br /> a) Balled and burlapped trees. <br /> <br /> ;I <br /> 1. Trees shall have a sound ball that has not been allowed to <br /> dry out at any time. <br /> 2. Root ball shall be firmly attached to the trunk <br /> 3. When planting, remove tie material and peel back burlap to <br /> expose soil on at least the top 1/3 of the root ball. <br /> b) Container grown tree. <br /> 1. Remove from the container and softly loosen root mass. <br /> 2. Inspect roots for a girdling or circling condition. If girdling <br /> or circling roots are present, the tree shall not be planted. <br /> 3. Trees shall be grown in the container for a maximum of <br /> one year. <br /> c) .Bare root trees. <br /> 1. Roots shall not be allowed to dry out at any time.
