Responsibilities: <br /> It is the responsibility of all employees and agents of the City to create and maintain <br /> a work environment free of workplace violence. <br /> Employees and other agents of the City who experience any form of violence in the <br /> workplace, including physical or verbal threats, are expected to report the incident, <br /> as outlined below. In addition, any City employee having knowledge of a violent act <br /> committed in the workplace by any other City employee must also report it; as <br /> outlined below. <br /> (NOTE: Emergency services personnel are often exposed to situations that involve <br /> violence. These guidelines are not meant to be applied to emergency personnel in <br /> the course of their interactions during an emergency or enforcement response. <br /> Department of Public Safety policies and standard operating procedures apply in <br /> those situations.) <br /> Supervisors and managers have additional responsibility to: <br /> 1. Stop verbal or physical threats and/or workplace violence. <br /> 2. Listen to complaints relating to violent acts, investigate the situation and take <br /> corrective action where appropriate. <br /> 3. Share information only with staff that have a need to know, generally a direct <br /> supervisor and/or the Human Resource and Risk Services (HRRS) Director. <br /> Response and Reporting Procedures:.- <br /> . A. Should a violent incident develop, the first priority should be the safety of <br /> employees and other persons in the area. If an employee feels threatened or in <br /> danger of imminent bodily harm s/he should take the following steps: <br /> 1. Leave the scene, if it can be done safely. No attempt should be made to control <br /> a vviolent person. <br /> 2. Call the police, if the situations warrants. The appropriate law <br /> enforcement agency should be contacted if there is a concern that acts may <br /> escalate or that someone's safety is threatened. <br /> <br /> 3. Notify a supervisor as soon as it can be done safely. <br /> 4. The employee and/or the supervisor should contact the division/department <br /> manager or HRRS Director as soon as possible. <br /> 5. The division/department manager or HRRS Director may notify the police if this <br /> has not already been done. <br /> B. If an individual poses no immediate threat, but is making verbal threats or <br /> otherwise intimidating employees or other persons in the area, then the employees <br /> should: <br /> <br />
