~b~ Bare root trees and shrubs. Trees shall be planted individually ~not~in clusters or
groups} using the spacing guidelines in Table 1. Shrubs shall be planted individually or in
groups of three as specified in Table 1. Spacing for shrubs also varies by species.
Bare root trees and shrubs shall be planted to the following instructions:
Rake aside the 3" compost blend that was applied in the fall.
Dig holes to a depth and width that is at least 6" beyond the extent of the roots. Place
plants so that the root collar or crown is level with the final soil level on the down slope
side. Excessively deep or excessively shallow planting shat! not be accepted.
Place the tree or shrub in the hole and straighten it so that it stands upright with no more
than 2D° of lean. Roots shall be planted straight and evenly in the hole. The main taproot
shall be planted straight without "U" roots, "J" roots, or "L" roots to the maximum extent
practicable. Lateral roots shall not be twisted, wrapped, or balled~up.
Backfill the hole with native soil that is free of debris. Use excess soil to form a berm on
the downward slope to retain water.
Replace the compost material to an even 3"depth, leaving space between the tree trunk
and the compost material. Any excess compost material shall be placed on the down
slope side of the plant to help with water retention.
Immediately water using sufficient water to eliminate air pockets and wet the roots
thoroughly,
See Figure 2 for bare root planting details.
~c} Container Trees. Trees shall be planted individually knot in clusters or groups} using
the spacing guidelines in Table 1.
Containertrees shall be planted using the following instructions:
.Rake aside the 3" compost blend that was applied in the fall.
Dig holes to a width that is at least 1.5 times the diameter of the root ball and to a depth
that allows the root collar or craws to sit level with the final sail level on the down slope
side. Excessively deep or excessively shallow planting shall not be accepted.
Remove tree from the container and carefully loosen root mass. If girdling or circling of
roots is present the tree shall not be planted. Place the tree in the hole and straighten it
so that it stands upright with no more than 2D° of lean.
Backfill the hole with native soil that is free of debris.
