Plants shall not exhibit signs of being root bound. <br />It is the responsibility of the Contractorto inspectthe plants before removal from the <br />nursery where they have been grown to make sure the plants meet these requirements. <br />Protect plants at ail times during handling, shipping, storage and planting against such <br />detrimental effects as windburn, extreme weather conditions and drying of roots and <br />foliage. <br />~2} Tree Quality -Trees shall have a single, straight central leader to the top of the tree <br />and a symmetrical, well-branched, straight trunk, as appropriate for the species. Trees <br />with a damaged or missing leader, multiple leaders or Y-crotches will be rejected. <br />Trees shall befree of co-dominant stems and vigorous, upright branches that compete <br />with the central leader. If the original leader has been headed, a new leader at least ~/~ <br />done-half} the diameter of the original leader shall be present. <br />The tree trunk shall be fairly straight, vertical and free of wounds except properly-made <br />pruning cuts}, sunburned areas, conks fungal fruiting bodies}, wood cracks; bleeding <br />areas, signs of boring insects, galls, cankersllesionsond girdling ties. The crown shall <br />show no signs of moisture stress as indicated by wilted, shriveled ar dead leaves or <br />branch dieback, <br />~3} Bare Root TreeslShrubs -Trees and shrubs in a bare root condition are not to <br />exceed ~" in caliper. Furnish only bare root plant materials that have dormant buds at the <br />time of planting. Roots shall be well established and full of live and vigorous fibrous roots <br />and larger structural roots. Bare root plants must be recently unearthed within a 5 day <br />period from nursery. Take great care to protect bare root plants against dehydration and <br />sunburn. <br />~4} Potted TreeslShrubs -Potted trees shall have been grown in the current container for <br />a minimum of one growing season and a maximum of two growing seasons. Roots shall <br />be well established and full of live and vigorous fibrous roots and larger structural roots. <br />Potted trees must not be root bound. <br />~5~ Cuttings -Willow cuttings shall be 24" in length and'/4 to ~/~ inch in diameter, unless <br />otherwise approved by the City, Cuttings shall be healthy, straight, and dormant at the <br />time of planting. Cuttings should be freshly cut within 24 hours} when delivered to the site <br />and must not be allowed to dry out. Soaking significantly increases the survival rate of the <br />cuttings. Live stakes shall be soaked for a period of 24 hours minimum and shall be <br />planted within 4 hours after they are removed from water. <br />~b~ Inspection -Plants will be subject to inspection by the City. The City will make no <br />plant material inspection at the source, except as it may elect. Notify the City of each <br />delivery of plants to the Project site no less than 24 hours ahead of delivery, The,. <br />Contractor shall not do any planting until the plants have been inspected and approved for <br />use by the City. Any planting done without prior approval of the plants will be considered <br />in violation of these specifications. <br />~c~ Plant Substitution - No substitution of plant materials will be permitted unless written <br />evidence is submitted that a specified plant or material cannot be obtained and has been <br />unobtainable since the execution of the Contract.
