Sample Media Relations Policy <br /> The Office of Communications assists in the preparation and dissemination of news <br /> <br /> releases that contribute to the overall visibility and achievement of [your organization]. <br /> [Your organization] follows a stated policy of providing and releasing information <br /> designed to establish a balanced, representative perspective of [your organization]. <br /> It is essential that members of the press have confidence in the Director of <br /> Communications. With the full cooperation of all staff, this will be possible. By <br /> adherence to these guidelines, the best interests of [your organization] will be served. <br /> 1. The Office of Communications will be charged with the responsibility to inform <br /> the media of activities, events and accomplishments of [your organization]. To <br /> increase awareness of [your organization's] strengths and priorities, the Director <br /> of Communications will have responsibility and authority to serve as <br /> spokesperson and representative with the media in presenting [your <br /> organization's] position on general issues as well as specific issues in times of <br /> crisis or change. <br /> 2. All news releases intended for external audiences are to be channeled through the <br /> Office of Communications. News releases may include but are not limited to <br /> announcements, general information, events, feature stories, crisis <br /> communications, position statements or publicity regarding [your organization], <br /> its programs and priorities. The determination of what is newsworthy and/or <br /> representative rests with the Office of Communications acting in the best interest <br /> of [your organization]. <br /> 3. .When detailed information is requested by the media regarding a topic of serious <br /> concern to [your organization], the President has the authority to serve as or <br /> appoint the spokesperson. In such instances, the Director of Communications will <br /> be involved in developing an agreed upon strategy for handling the media or <br /> providing statements to the press. Appropriate other staff may be involved in the <br /> development of the strategy. All affected will be informed of the strategy in a <br /> timely manner. <br /> 4. In a cooperative effort,, all staff will keep the Director of Communications <br /> informed of activities, events and issues in [their operation/department] that may <br /> or should attract or has already attracted media attention.
