FURTHER RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGER
All department news releases and council newsletter articles shall be approved and disseminated by the
Airport Manager or Public Affairs Manager.
Notice that an Airport employee has spoken with the media shall be provided to the Airport Manager and
Public Affairs Manager as soon as possible, except in routine communications or when, by policy or
procedure, the Public Affairs Manager has delegated authority for media relations. The Public Affairs
Manager will make a reasonable effort to obtain a printed or electronic copy of any news stories involving
the Airport Division.
The Public Affairs Manager or his or her designee will provide media relations training to employees who
are authorized to contact the media or serve as spokespeople for the department. Completion of a media
relations training course does not supercede divisions' policies regarding the designation of media
contacts or spokespeople.
UNANTICIPATED MEDIA CONTACT
Occasionally the media may personally approach or telephone Airport Division staff directly. It is our
goal to ensure the media is forwarded to the person most appropriate to respond to their questions.
Except as noted above, Airport employees are not required to respond to "on-the-spot" media questions.
Airport employees are required to be courteous and, if comfortable doing so, may answer questions about
flights and other general airport information.
Airport Division employees are encouraged to decline immediate response to a media request if they at all
feel uncomfortable with the situation or if the inquiry pertains to a subject matter beyond the scope of the
employee's responsibilities. When declining to talk to the media, Airport employees shall immediately
refer the media representative to the Airport Administration Office or the Public Affairs Manager.

It is important that Airport employees, who do not feel comfortable answering on-the-spot media

questions, remember that there is no reason to feel defensive, embarrassed, or any need to be evasive.
Simply referring the media representative to the Airport Administration Office or Public Affairs Manager

for follow-up is perfectly proper and acceptable.
i
