Delta Ponds North Path Description and Task List
The proposed Delta Ponds North Path will connect the main ponds path system, to
be constructed during the Army Corps/City of Eugene restoration project, with the
east-west section of Goodpasture Island Road. The North Path will extend from
near the radio tower east to Dedrick slough and then north along the slough to the
K-Mart parking lot, adding nearly one-half mile of gravel path to the ponds path
system. The fully accessible path will be six feet wide with a compacted gravel
surface for the majority of its length. A boardwalk section of the path will offer
visitors an opportunity to walk through the wetlands adjacent to the ponds - an
excellent area for wildlife viewing. Benches, interpretive signs and viewing areas
will be located along the length of the new path.
The methods of construction can include specialized trail building equipment such
as motorized wheelbarrows and narrow-tracked excavators or hand tools and
equipment. Some areas will be accessible to larger construction equipment.
City survey and design staff are working out the design details and alignment of
the North Path and the associated amenities. Once the alignment has been
determined and staked, the tasks required to construct the path will include:
• Clearing and grubbing vegetation from the path alignment
• Coordinate with Stream Team volunteers to salvage desirable
plants in alignment
• Cut and remove brush
• Fell and remove trees -leave habitat stumps where possible
• Grub'tree stumps, roots and other debris from alignment
• Establishing rough grades along the path alignment
• .Excavate material from cut areas
• Place and compact material in fill areas
• Smooth transitions to create continuous rough path grade
• Constructing drainage culverts under the path as necessary
• Construct swale on uphill side of path where necessary to conduct
water to pipe
• Install drain pipe across path alignment
• Armor culverts inlets and outlets as necessary

• Constructing boardwalk
• Excavate as necessary for footings and abutments
• Construct footings and abutments (probably reinforced concrete)
• Attach framing (probably pressure-treated timbers) to footings
• Install decking and railings
