Tests done Friday and Monday confirmed the presence of extensive
i
I decay in the ba e of the tree and in the lower portions of its three main limbs.
~ "Becau e of its hazardous condition and its location in a heavily used area of a public
park, there's n way to adequately address the safety issue," said Snyder, who consulted with
several local a d regional arborists before reaching his final decision.
I
Snyder aid he received lots of good ideas in meetings with citizens since last
~I
Wednesday. I response to a request from the Eugene Tree Foundation, which advocates the
planting of nat've trees whenever possible, a big leaf maple will be planted to replace the old
tree, and other ark sites suitable for big leaf maples will be identified.

Pubilic Works • Admini tration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
