~ >
f
i
i
News Release Temporary Traffic Signal
March 25, 19 9
Page 2
i
E Safety is also a key consideration in determining signal priorities. During the 12-month
period ending September 1998, a total of 10 accidents were reported in the vicinity of Garden
Way and Cen ennial Boulevard, and the lack of signalization in the intersection could have been
a factor in thr e of those accidents, Ludeke said. However, in the past two months the accident
~ rate has clim ed, with three injury accidents reported, including Tuesday's fatal crash.
Lude e cautioned that traffic signals improve safety only when motorists accept their
responsibility to drive safely. He noted that the last fatal accident in Eugene, at the intersection
I of 13th Aven and Patterson Street, involved a driver who ran a red light.
The t mporary signal is expected to be in place in May, Ludeke said. Transportation staff
also plans to estripe the traffic lanes on Centennial Boulevard as soon as weather permits. The
restriping wil provide left-turn refuges for drivers on Centennial to turn left onto either
northbound arden Way or southbound Lindley Lane.
Curre tly, there are 212 traffic signals in Eugene, including eight installed last year.
I
