, <br /> January 13, 1 99 <br /> CONTACT: im FZhay, Acting Park Operations Manager, 682-4809 <br /> From Public I formation Section, 682-5523 <br /> FOR IMME IATE RELEASE <br /> FIRE DE ARTMENT CLEANS UP MYSTERIOUS WHITE POWDER IN PARK <br /> ~ Piles o white powder believed to be flour have been cleaned up in Maurie Jacobs Park, <br /> and a sample as been sent to a laboratory for analysis. <br /> The E ene Fire Department's HazMat team this morning responded to reports of an <br /> unknown whit powder found at the base of trees and light poles in the riverside park. Field <br /> sampling Indic ted the material was either flour or flour laced with pesticide. Parks staff marked <br /> more than 50 s all piles of the material, and fire fighters cleaned up the powder and washed <br /> down each site Additional reports were received about similar piles on feeder streets to the park, <br /> leading to spec lation that the material may have been placed to mark the course of an unofficial <br /> run. <br /> j <br /> i While t e exact cost of the clean-up effort isn't known, Tim Rhay, the City's acting park <br /> operations man ger, said it is likely to be "significant."
