~ ~ -
- ~ -
May 4, 1998
CONTACT: Gary Ludeke, Traffic Engineer, xxx-xxxx
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
'i FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
T~IREE NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS INCREASE SAFETY AT BUSY INTERSECTIONS
II Eugene area motorists should be on the lookout for three new traffic signals designed to
i
~I increase safety at busy intersections. _
ail Anew signal was activated Tuesday, Apri128, at the intersection of Goodpasture Island
I,i Road and the Delta Highway northbound offramp. This is the second signal in that area; a signal
at Goodpasture Island and Delta Highway southbound was installed in 1997. The new signal
I' cost approximately $100,000, with costs split between the City and Lane County. Traffic safety
concerns and growing traffic volumes, particularly during the holiday shopping season, are
~iamong the reasons why the new signal is warranted.
~I Scheduled for activation this Tuesday, May 5, is a new signal at the intersection of First
IlAvenue and Seneca Road. Excessive delays due to heavy traffic volumes at the current two-way
(stop warranted the installation of this signal. The City was able to significantly reduce
installation costs by using salvaged poles and having Transportation Division staff do the
installation work. Also in the area of cost savings, the Transportation Division has designed this
~ignal to test the use of video detection equipment rather than more expensive in-pavement
traffic loops. The video detection equipment is expected to be installed in about six weeks.

Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl .Eugene, OR 97401-2727.
