I
News Release Wastewater Lines to Be Repaired
July 16, 1998

III Page 2
Actual re airs are made by inserting a folded plastic liner into the existing wastewater

I p
line and expanding it using steam and pressure. This process, which has been used successfully
in the last several years in other parts of the city, makes it possible to seal cracks, broken pipe,

~I and bad joints from the inside of the existing pipe without digging it up. Hookups to individual
homes are made by excavating the existing connection point and replacing it with a new tap
drilled through the liner. As a final step, manholes are resealed and water-tight lids are installed

i

Iii to reduce stormwater inflow & infiltration.

~ In most areas, traffic impacts should be minimal because much of the work can be done

I
without excavation and many of the wastewater collection lines are located in alleys or, when in
the streets near the curb. However motorists will encounter some construction delays, local
lane restrictions or street closures. Typically, these closures should last for only about a day. For
u -to-date information on this and other public construction projects, call the City's traffic relief
r
hotline, 984-8484, or visit the City's home page on the Internet, www.ci.eugene.or.us.

I

I~
