f 1 /l~~S ~/i 1 fw /T~~i
Public Works
March 12, 1997 Administration
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
CONTACT: N cy Nathanson, City Councilor, 682-5010 Eugene, OR 97401
(503) 687-5262
Frpm Public Inf rmation Section, 682-5523
'FUR IlViMED TE RELEASE -
LOCAL USINESS PLEDGES TO CARE FOR TREES ALONG AMAZON CREEK
A sectio of Amazon Creek near Oak Patch Road soon will be nicer place for people and
ildlife, thanks t a unique partnership between a local business and the City of Eugene.
Employe s from Jody Coyote Inc., a local jewelry manufacturer, will join other community
olunteers this S rday, March 15, at Oak Patch and Amazon Creek starting at 9 a.m. to plant trees and
stall benches al ng Amazon Creek. Two of the public benches are being donated by Jody Coyote, and
third bench is th gift of local resident Ted Booth. Booth and Jody Coyote employees have been active
i past projects to nhance the Amazon, including last year's planting of 30 trees between Baile Hill
Y
oad and the Ric rdson bicycle bridge.
Even mor significant than the bench donation and volunteer planting effort, from the City's
p rspective, is Jod Coyote's pledge to maintain the benches and trees in the future. Budget reductions
a sociated with M asure 47 make it increasingly important for the City and local businesses and
r sidcnts to forge 1 ng-term maintenance partnerships, says Councilor Nancy Nathanson, who has
o anized several hancement projects along Amazon Creek.
The five tr es to be planted when the benches are installed are native ash, which will improve
ldli~e habitat and blend well with the natural wetland environment in that area. Ash also is very well
d pted to this clim te, which-makes it easier for volunteers to maintain. Businesses or residents
n rested in "adopt ng" sections of local waterways can contact the City of Eugene Stream Team at 682-

#8~0.
i~,
•
