/ /s / /l~r~ ~/i 1 I.i 1/ T.~'/i
~'I~~~/ ~~~`~/~~L~JL~J~
MAY 20, 1996
Public Works
CONTACT: Gary Ludeke, Traffic Engineer, 687-5218 Administration
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
From Public Information Section, 687-5523 Eugene, OR 97401
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (503) 687-5262
(REVISED: ADDITION INFORMATION AT END OF RELEASE)
WEST 18TH AND BARGER DRIVE TO GET NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Two new traffic signals are scheduled to be put into operation Thursday, May 23. The signals
are located at Barger Drive and Terry Street and at West 18th Avenue and Hawkins Lane.
Both signals will be "traffic-actuated" using in-pavement vehicle sensors, and
"pedestrian-actuated" with push-buttons. The signal at Hawkins Lane will be connected to the City's
central signal system computer to allow timing coordination with the other traffic signals on West 18th
Avenue. Provisions have been made to connect the Barger Drive signal to the signal system computer at
a later date when the other signals on Barger Drive are connected to this system. As a part of the City's

r
commitment to reduce fire department response time, sensors are being installed at both intersections to
detect approaching fire trucks on emergency runs and give them a green light as quickly as safety
considerations permit.
West 18th Avenue and Hawkins Lane will have left-turn arrows to allow a
"protected/permissive" turn from westbound 18th Avenue to southbound Hawkins Lane. This means
motorists can turn left on a left-turn green arrow while the opposite-direction traffic is stopped. Turns
also are allowed during the normal green light period while opposite-direction traffic is moving, although
turning traffic must yield to the opposite-direction traffic. Due to a relatively small number of motorists
making left-turns at Barger Drive and Terry Street, this signal will not have left-turn arrows. Left-turn
arrows can be installed later if the need arises.
Lantz Electric of Pleasant Hill is installing the signals under a contract with the City. The cost of
the two signals is approximately $264,000. The City evaluates requests for new traffic signals each year.
Current funding levels enable Eugene to install one or two new traffic signals per year, on average.
