}
r
iii
iiil`~%i~%
/~~~ri
JUNE 4, 1996 Public Works
Administration
CONTACT: Diane Bishop, Bicycle Coordinator, 687-5218 City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
From Public Information Section, 687-5523 Eugene, OR 97401
(503) 687-5262
BUSINESS BICYCLE CHALLENGE SET FOR THURSDAY
"Take the Challenge" is this year's theme of the fourth annual Business Bicycle
Challenge inviting businesses to compete for the highest percentage of bike commuters on
Thursday, June 6, as part of Bike Commute Week.
More than 75 area organizations have signed up for this year's event which is sponsored
by the cities of Eugene and Springfield, Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority, the Lane Council
of Governments, Lane Transit District's "Commuter Solutions" program, KRVM-FM radio and
Prince Puckler's Ice Cream. Burley Design Cooperative will provide "tandem taxi" rides to
employees who prefer the help of an experienced rider and KRVM-FM radio will broadcast live
from the corner of 24th Avenue and Amazon Parkway the morning of the ride.
"We expect to see more than 1,500 people commuting on bicycles Thursday which means
there will be 1,500 fewer cars on the street and 1,500 people arriving at work feeling relaxed,
refreshed and ready to start the day. It's better than a cup of coffee" said Molly Elder,
coordinator of the Business Bicycle Challenge.
The goal is to encourage people to discover how bicycling to work can be a healthy and
fun way to reduce traffic, pollution and parking problems. "The Business Bicycle Challenge was
a huge success for us last year," said Lois Anderson of SpectraPhysics. "We're hoping for a
~r similar turnout this year."
~`'U~)
