For more information regarding the open <br /> house or t e pro,7ect, please contact Les Lyle at 687-5291. <br /> The Oregon Youth Conservation Corp, division of the Oregon State Commission <br /> on Childre and Families, recently funded a $55,000 grant to Looking Glass to <br /> complete a number of projects that focus on enhancing community natural <br /> resource a eas. The Public Works Department was one of four agencies <br /> collaborating with Looking Glass on the grant application. Other <br /> participan s included: the Southern Willamette Private Industry Council, <br /> Food for L ne County, and Home Depot. The grant was funded through amusement <br /> device to sand the state general fund. <br /> Under the onditions of the grant, the department will hire approximately 25 <br /> youth fro Looking Glass' Lane-Metro Youth Corps (LMYC) to work on targeted <br /> Public Wo ks projects. The work will help the youth participants continue <br /> their edu ation and improve their employability, as they work on projects of <br /> value to he community. LMYC members are young men and women between the <br /> ages of 1 and 24 who have dropped out of school and/or are disadvantaged and <br /> at-risky uth. <br /> ~ Under the guidelines of the grant, the $55,000 will be used to pay a crew <br /> superviso and wages for the youth crews. Public Works will identify trail <br /> and wetla d projects and will provide all the necessary materials, tools, and <br /> r ~ equipment. In addition, City project managers and staff will offer ongoing <br /> technical assistance to the crew supervisor and crew members and will assist <br /> with on-site instruction and education. <br /> Identifie Public Works projects include constructing a wheelchair accessible <br /> trail in pencer Butte Park near the new ropes course; installing signs along <br /> channels nd creeks; assessing and inventorying native species in Hendricks <br /> Park: pru ing vegetation on Ridgeline and Spencer Butte trails: and restoring <br /> and enhan ing wildlife habitat and removing non-natural vegetation in wetland <br /> areas. 0 her projects will be added as funds allow.
