Public Wor s Responds to Requests to Modify Traffic Controls
Each year, a Public Works Department receives hundreds of requests from citizens to either
add new tr ffic controls or to modify various existing traffic controls. Recent changes made
in two neig borhoods are a good illustration of the process used by the Transportation
Division to respond to these requests.
More contr ls, in the form of stop signs and yield signs, have been added in the Bethel-
Danebo are south of Royal Avenue and west of Bertelsen Road. Several stop signs also
were added to side streets along Clinton Drive in the Willakenzie area. The Transportation
~ Division re eived a number of calls from residents in these neighborhoods in the past year.
Staff also h s been tracking traffic patterns in these areas because of recent development.
The first st p in the process is determining the need for traffic control change. Federal
guidelines re used to evaluate safety and transportation efficiency issues. Traffic counts are
made. Ac ident statistics are reviewed. Land-use patterns are considered, including recent
I, and anticip ted new development in the area. Appropriate site-specific strategies for
' improving ublic safety are considered. If the evaluations establish a need for significant
change, ne' hborhood leaders are notified and a news release is distributed to advise the
general pu lic. Signs may be posted to alert motorists to changed traffic controls.
~I
Because of the large volume of requests received, the evaluation process may take several
months to omplete. Not all requests for new or revised traffic controls result in changes
being mad If the evaluation indicates that a change would not be appropriate, the citizen
who reque ed the change is notified, and the reason for the determination is explained.
Also, in m ny cases some other improvement can be made that better addresses the citizen's
~I concern th n what had been specifically suggested as the solution.
~ For more i ormation about the process and guidelines used to evaluate traffic control

' i changes, c 11 Dave Reinhard at 687-5218.
I
~I
i
