Public Works
Administration
City of Eugene

~ 858 Pearl Street
October 4, 1993 Eugene, OR 97401
(503) 687-5262
CONTACT: Chuck Solin, Loss Control Environmental Program Manager, 687-5061
From Sandra Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANALYSIS OF TUGMAN PARK LANDFILL SITE TO BEGIN

~ Beginning Tuesday, October 5, and continuing through the week, PARAMETRIX
Inc. and Northwest Geophysical Associates will conduct a boundary investigation to
determine the footprint of the Tugman Park landfill site.
The contractor will take a number of bore samples from the site to help them
map the boundaries of the original landfill. They will use electromagnetic techniques to
map metals and debris that are commonly found in landfills.
After the site characterization data has been collected, initial site controls will be
implemented when and if funding is identified. If necessary, a study will be conducted to
identify and evaluate any exposure risks that still exist and identify methods to reduce
exposure.. If no significant risks remain, the city will begin conducting periodic
monitoring and maintenance activities at the site.
The contractor also will perform environmental tests to determine if any
contaminants are located under a city owned site at 38th and Hilyard St. Richie
Weinman, Housing and Community Development manager for the city of Eugene, said,
"Since the contractor is right next door, we saw this as a good opportunity to examine the
site and earn if there are any potential problems with this property." Originally acquired
as a potential site for low-income housing, Weinman said the city has no current plans to
develop the property.
Tugman Park Landfill is a two-acre site located in the southwest corner of
Tugman Park on East 39th Avenue. The landfill was in operation from 1925 to 1951.

i

i
