BIKE PATROL NEWS RELEASE Page 2
July 16, 1993
The idea of using bicycles in the parking enforcement program was
suggested', by the city's parking control team during the Eugene Decisions
process. After checking with other communities that have successfully used
bicycle atrols in their parking programs, the city worked with local
bicyclin advocates to come up with a workable program for Eugene.
"We need to diversify our transportation system, and a parking patrol
that used human-powered vehicles is a step in that direction," says Jan
VanderTu~n, director of the local Center for Appropriate Transport, which has
worked with the city on the bicycle patrol program. "It can be done in the
city eas ly, and it even uses a locally produced product that support local
industry "
During the first phase of the program, the city will rent a bicycle to
evaluate various options that may improve efficiency. At least for now, the
lack of ~ cover means that the bicycle will be used primarily for
fair-weather patrols. But Kronholm sees the pedal patrol fitting right into
the city's goal of increased use of transportation alternatives.
"We're committed to making this a regular mode of transportation," said

Kronhol ml.
t
