It's also a
good way to issue them.
Beginning Tuesday, July 20, the City of Eugene will begin using a
bicycle in its parking enforcement program. By substituting a bicycle for a
gas-powered motor scooter, the city expects to cut costs and pollution, said
Kay Kronhalm, parking supervisor for the Eugene Public Works Department.
"W~ are excited about being on the cutting edge, using a bicycle for
parking enforcement," Kronholm said. "While other cities have bicycle
parking patrols, the officers typically do not engage in a full range of
parking~,'enforcement duties. Our goal is to perform all functions of the job
from the bicycle."
Ong of the city's seven parking control officers has volunteered to
pedal tthe beats within the 500-block parking enforcement area. Consideration
was giv~n to safety and efficiency in selecting a bicycle for the patrol
program The three-wheeled vehicle has 21 gears, recumbent seating, and a
storage box to hold parking "boots," a chalk stick, and other tools of trade.
The parking control officer received safety training from the League of
American Wheelmen and will wear a helmet on the job.
