. ~
FERRY STREET BRIDGE REPAVING PRESS RELEASE
Page 2
. August 26, 1993
The work is planned to be done at night. During the construction
period, cr~ws generally will work from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the
southbound ',lanes and from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes.
During thole hours, motorists can expect delays and detours. Traffic will be
limited to two lanes, one in each direction, with crossover lane detours. At
times, off ramps and on-ramps will be closed. The Fourth Avenue on-ramp (by
EWEB) will be closed to through traffic during nighttime construction hours.
Detour notjces and other signs will be posted to keep motorists advised of
current conditions. The contractor has prepared a traffic plan that includes
access for emergency vehicles and the Lane Transit District.
During the daytime, the bridge will be open to four lanes of traffic,
but there will be bumps and rough road conditions. Motorists are advised to
use alterndte routes such as the Washington-Jefferson Bridge during the
constructi n ;period.
The ~ 26,000 repaving project is part of the city's street and alley
preservation :program. The project is designed to address the failure of the
asphalt on~~the bridge, which carries an average of 64,000 vehicle a day
across the Willamette River. Longer-range transportation issues and
alternatives involving the Ferry Street Bridge traffic corridor are being
studied an~ are likely to be the subject of public discussions later this
year.
I
