Public Works

August 26, 1993 City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
Jeff Wright

The Register-Guard
FAX: 683,7631
Dear Jeff
Per your request, I am faxing you a news release on the Ferry Street Bridge
repaving project. This letter provides information not included in the news
release.
Scheduling:
On the evening of Thursday, September 1, several sections of raised median on
both ends of the bridge will be removed to allow cross-over traffic detours
once the road work starts. Beginning Tuesday, September 7, and lasting for
approximately one week, the old asphalt surface will be removed by a process
known as rotomilling, and other repairs will be made. The current schedule
calls for the new paving to be applied September 16-17. Pavement marking,
median replacement, and other finish-up work is scheduled the week of Septem-
ber 20. The schedule is contingent on the weather.
Bidding details
On August 10, Eugene Sand & Gravel was awarded the Ferry Street Bridge repav-
ing contract for its low bid of $226,235. One other firm bid on the job with
a bid of $74,576. The engineer's estimate for the work was $246,720. This
project is part of the city's street and alley preservation program, which is
funded by the road fund.
An earlier round of bidding on a larger-scope project drew two bids in the
range of $25,000. Because the bids exceeded the $300,000 budgeted for the
project, the city rejected all bids, and staff reduced the scope of work by
addressing the most pressing needs and eliminating work such as median re-
pairs, miner bump repairs on concrete joints, and some of the storm drainage
improvements that originally had been planned. Those sorts of improvements
can be made at such time as the Ferry Street Bridge is reconstructed.
If you have any questions, you may call me at 465-2712, or Les Lyle, at
687-5291.
Sincerely,I.
~ ~C~
Eric Jones
Public Information Specialist
encl: Ferry Street Bridge Repaving press release
