- I~~, EWEB to egin Third Tree-Trimming Project on October 31
The Euge e Water & Electric Board has scheduled its third tree-trimming project under a new
intergove mental agreement between EWEB and the City. The line-clearance project will
begin Mo day, October 31, in central Eugene. The trimming work, which is expected to take
about a m nth to complete, will occur in an area bounded by 22nd Avenue on the south,
~ Garfield S reet on the west, Patterson Street on the east, and Fifth Avenue on the north. The
I, trimming i needed to keep overhead power lines safe and reliable, as required by the Oregon
Public Uti ity Commission. No significant problems were encountered with the first two
projects.
The interg vernmental agreement sets standards to be used for tree pruning, tree removals,
i, and replac ment planting. The agreement also establishes guidelines for public notification of
upcoming ine-clearance projects. Approximately 4,000 fliers were sent this week to residents
in the upc ming project area.
During th past year, tree crews from EWEB and the City of Eugene worked together to
develop tri ming methods that better protect the long-term health of trees by training trees to
grow awa from power lines. Trees pruned using this method initially may appear less
uniform th trees topped or "rounded over" to remove obstructing growth; however, over
time, these trees typically will attain a larger crown than a similar tree that is repeatedly
topped.
During the trimming project, trees found to have excessive rot will be removed. All trees
targeted fo removal will be inspected by the City, and trees will be posted for seven days
' before rem val to allow public comment. For each tree that must be removed, the City will
plant two ees in the local area.
For more i formation please contact Johnny Medlin of Public Works Maintenance at 687-
5220 or M rtY Douglass of EWEB at 484-2411.
I
~i
VIII
~I
it
