i

~rr
CC Newsle er Article
July 15, 19 4
PUBLIC ORKS BEGINS RIVER CROSSING PROJECT
Divine-Dut a was recently awarded a contract for $262,000 to complete the first phase of a
two-phase roject. The first phase will include the construction of two sewer pressure mains
under the illamette River. Construction on the first phase will begin July 15 with
j completion by August 31, 1994. The contractor will install a 24-inch diameter and a 14-inch
diameter s wer pressure main under the Willamette River. A trench, eight-feet deep and ten-
feet wide, 'll be excavated across the river bottom, approximately 2,000 feet east of the I-5
bridge. O ce the pipes are installed and bedded with clean, crushed rock, the trench will be
covered wi h the excavated materials. The excavation will cause some turbidity of the water,
resulting f m the disturbance to the river bottom during the trenching work. The entire
process h been reviewed by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Oregon Division
of State L ds, and the Army Corps of Engineers. These agencies have issued permits to the
City to en re the project will not disturb fish or aquatic life.
j During the second phase, a contractor will be hired to construct a new pump station to replace
the Judkin Point Pump Station and to install gravity sewer lines. Work on Phase II will
begin this eptember, continuing through August 1995. The new pump station will be built
in Glenwo d, just north of the Auto Brokers on Franklin Boulevard. The Judkins Point Pump
Station w built in the 1950s and is at it operational capacity. With only one pump and no
backup, th pump station is no longer reliable. The new pump station and sewer lines will
supply the additional capacity ultimately needed to serve the Glenwood and Laural Hills
areas.
I
Please call Les Lyle at 687-5243 if you have questions about the project.
'I
