~`;.
NEWS RELY SE
May 25, ~ 90
Contact: erry Smith
87-5262
New River Road Survey
A com unity information survey of 402 River Road residents conducted in
March rev sled the respondents are much better informed about the sewer
project t an they were three years ago. The survey asked residents about the
sewer pro ect and annexation to determine their level of information, and to
find out hat added services or incentives would encourage them to favor
annexing o Eugene. The survey also sought ways to improve communication
between t e City and River Road residents.
In 19 7, 2/3 of the residents did not understand that annexation would be
required o get sewers. Changes to the Metropolitan Area General Plan cur-
rently pe ding would enable residents to connect to sewers without annexing.
In the ne survey, 81go of the residents were aware the sewers are being
required y the Department of Environmental Quality and that they will be
installed with or without annexation. The survey also found that the annexa-
tion issu has been complicated by the link to sewers.
Of th se surveyed, 25% said they would approve annexation if the election
were held today. A majority of those polled would approve annexation if they
were offe ed a 10-year tax differential. The City's current annexation
program p ases in full City taxes over five years. According to the survey,
improved olice protection would also generate significant support for annex-
ation.
- more -
