NEWS RELEASE <br /> August 22, 1988 <br /> CONTACT: hristine Andersen, Public Works Director, 687-5074 <br /> From Sandr Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523 <br /> FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE <br /> CITY HIRES AIRPORT MANAGER FOR MAHLON SWEET AIRPORT <br /> Eugen Oregon Michael Boggs from Charlottesville, Virginia has been <br /> hired as airport manager for Mahlon Sweet Airport and will replace Robert W. <br /> Shelby, wh is retiring. Boggs plans to begin work with the city on <br /> October 10, 1988. His annual salary will be $52,464. <br /> Boggs has been director of aviation for Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport <br /> in Chariot esville, Virginia since 1985. He first joined the airport in 1977 <br /> as airport manager, leaving six years later to manage Walker Field Airport in <br /> <br /> i <br /> Grand Junc ion, Colorado. In 1985, he returned to Charlottesville-Albermarle <br /> after city and county officials hired him back to manage their $16.5 million <br /> airport ex ansion project. <br /> Boggs is 44 years old and has a degree in business administration from <br /> <br /> i <br /> East Carolina University. He was a pilot for the United States Navy for six <br /> years, and as part of his shore duty, he was airfield officer for the Naval <br /> Air Statio After leaving the service, Boggs worked for the Virginia Depart- <br /> <br /> i <br /> ment of Av'ation until 1977 as a pilot and an aviation operations specialist. <br /> <br /> ~ Many f the issues facing Mahlon Sweet Airport are familiar to Boggs and <br /> <br /> i <br /> are issues he addressed at Charlottesville-Albermarle and at Walker Field. <br /> According o Boggs, because of higher ticket fares and inadequate facilities, <br /> <br /> j the Charlo tesville airport was losing about half its market to Richmond and <br /> more <br /> <br />
