i
NEWS RELEASE
February 1989
CONTACT: Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Superintendent, 687-5220
Gene Shutt, Maintenance Manager, 687-5220
Sandra Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
1
i FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE
PROPERT OWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING SNOW AND ICE FROM CITY SIDEWALKS
The s ow and freezing weather has created hazardous conditions on side-
walks thr ughout the city, and the city maintenance division has received a
number of accident reports and many requests to clean sidewalks.
Acco ding to Bob Hammitt, maintenance superintendent, the city is not
.t

~r responsib a for removing ice and snow from city sidewalks that border private
~ ~ property. Eugene city code states that the owner of the land abutting the
sidewalk s responsible for maintaining the sidewalk and driveway approaches
in a safe condition. This includes the removal of snow and ice. Hammitt
also said property owners, not the city, are responsible for any claims
resulting from a property owner's failure to remove the ice or snow from
their sid walks.
Sinc city maintenance crews are busy clearing and sanding city streets,
Hammitt s id they do not have the resources to enforce the code at this time.
He encour ged property owners to keep their sidewalks cleared to avoid the
possibili y of having a claim filed against them by an injured person.
END
i
