Reed announced this week he <br /> had accep ed an offer to join the city of San Bernadino as director of their <br /> Building nd Safety Department. The department has 40 employees and a $2.0 <br /> million b dget. As Eugene's building official, Reed was responsible for a <br /> $1.5 mill on budget and managed activities ranging from permit processing, <br /> plan revi ws, zoning, sign enforcement, and field inspections, including <br /> nuisance nd unsafe building abatement. <br /> Reed joined the city in 1979 as the assistant building official. In <br /> 1985, he as appointed city building official and division manager for the <br /> Building afety Division. Building Safety was then a division of the Public <br /> Works Dep rtment. Last winter, the Building Safety division and the Planning <br /> Departmen were merged with the Development Department. <br /> "The reorganization gave me an opportunity to reexamine my professional <br /> and caree goals," Reed said. "Our sons, Brent, 19, and Brian, 23 are grown, <br /> and many four friends have moved to southern California and Arizona. My <br /> wife, Bre da, and I decided this was a good time to make a move if we were <br /> serious a out leaving the area. So, I started to explore work opportunities <br /> in southe n California and Arizona," Reed added. <br /> ' more <br /> <br />
