Road improvementProject -Pavement Design Proposal
Steve,
In response to your request, I am pleased to submit the following proposal and fee estimate to provide
pavement design recommendations for the Chad Drivel0ld Coburg Road Improvement Project.
Project Understanding
The project will extend Chad Drive. to connect with North Game Farm Road. The proposed alignment
for the extension turns north just beyond the present east end of Chad Drive and runs approximately
1,200 R earth along. the alignment of Old Coburg Road where it then angles northeast across farmland
to a new intersection with North Game Farm Road at approximately 400 ft southeast of the present Old
Coburg Road it3tersaction. In a separate project, North Game Farm Road will also be improved from
the new intersection southeast to the City limits of Springfield by widening and rehabilitation or
reconstruction. Our proposed pavement investigation far that pra,~ct is covered by a separate
proposal. However, we plan to combine the field Investigation work for these two projects to save
mobilization costs and will prorate the combined cysts between the two projhcts. Our proposed work ,
program and fee estimate for the Chad Dr pavement design. are described below.
Pavement Investigation and Design Work Scope
1. Field iavestigatian & Testing
We have assutrred that the City will arrange for right-of-entry far baring explorations within the
sections of new alignment. crossing private property.
Our project englrteer will visit the site to b~:ome familiar with project conditions and to mark boring
exploration locations for underground utility clearance.
Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) non-destructive deflection tests will be conducted at 100-foot
intervals in both directions on the existing alignment of Chad. Drive to obtain data. for estimating the in
situ resilient modulus of the subgrade soil.
Shallow boring explorations (maximum 5 foot depth) will be conducted. to log the subgrade soil
conditions and obtain samples for laboratory testing at two locations where the new alignment crosses
fields and at one location within the Old Coburg Road alignment. The exploration holes outside of
pavement areas will be backfilled with loosely compacted. excavated materials. The exploration hole
within the pavement will be patched below the bound pavement layers with compacted native- materials
and the bound pavement layers will be patched using "Instant Road Repair°, an ODOT QPL approved
high performance asphalt patching material, compacted by vibratory hammer. We will provide traffic
control (signs and flappers) for our testing and exploration work within the madway.
2. I.abaratary Testing
Soils samples from the explorations will be tested in our laboratory for soil classification, evaluation of

compaction and determination of resilient modulus (Mr). The natural water content will be deternuned
for all samples and the samples will be examined for visual reclassification. One bulk sample will be

tested to determine optimum moisture content and maximum dry density for evaluation oP sail
