Task 13 -Set traps for turtles
SLP students working with ODFW staffwill set traps for turtles in Spring (approximately April -but
dependent on when turtles emerge from hibernation) as turtles are coming out of hibernation. Traps
will be located away from easily accessible public areas to reduce tampering.
Schedule: Late Apri12005
Task 14 - CLeck traps and collect data
Traps will be checked daily. Information will be collected on each turtle and an identifying mazker
will be placed on each shell. Turtles will be released back in the ponds. Traps will be checked daily
for 2-3 weeks or until such time as no new turtles (those without an identifying mazker) are being
caught. At this point traps will be removed from ponds.
Schedule: April -May 2005 '
Product: Field data sheets and mazked turtles
Task 15 -Remove non-native turtles
Contingent on ODFW fmding an isolated pond suitable for relocation, SLP students will collect all
red eared sliders and give them to ODFW for transportation to isolated pond.
Schedule: April -July
Product: Report
Task 16 -Conduct visual surveys
Several days will be spent observing turtles at the ponds to determine the ratio of marked to
unmarked turtles. The ratio will be used to make population estimates.
Schedule: Early May 2005
Task 17 -Data Entry and analysis
Students will transfer all field data to an excel file. Based on their data students will estimate
Western pond turtle population in the ponds, ratio of Western pond turtles to other turtle species
found in the ponds, age structure of western pond turtles, male to female distribution, and percent
damaged by predators and /or vehicles.
Schedule: Late May 2005
Product: Database and turtle monitoring report
Task 18 -Nest site preparation
Students will identify potential nesting areas at Delta Ponds based on aspect,. proximity to water, and
vegetation. They will work with volunteers from nearby apartment complexes and/or schools to
prepaze an experimental nesting test site. The test site will be further divided into 3 management
areas -mowed once, mowed twice, and mowed and weed whacked.
Schedule: late May 2005

Task 19 -Train volunteers to monitor nest site usage
Summer volunteer coordinator will train students, Stream Team volunteers, and other volunteers to
monitor experimental nest sites to determine if what level of management activity is appropriate to
support western pond turtle nesting activity.
Schedule: June -July 2005
Product: Report
