The project work will begin on October 15th, 2004 and conclude by July 15, 2005. The specific <br /> tasks aze described below. <br /> 1.Orientation <br /> Task 1-Training with ODFW staff <br /> ODFW staff will train SLP students and additional student volunteers to check fish traps and <br /> identify, measure, weigh and release all fish species found in traps. <br /> Schedule: October 2004 <br /> Task 2 -Meet key staff <br /> The SLP team will meet with key City of Eugene staff and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife <br /> staff. <br /> Schedule: November 2004 <br /> Task 3 -Visit Delta Ponds <br /> The SLP team will tour Delta Ponds to become familiar with the layout and key habitat areas for fish <br /> and turtles. <br /> Schedule: November 2004 <br /> Task 4 -Review existing background material <br /> The SLP team members will read all pertinent background material (as assigned by the project <br /> manager) including articles on Western pond turtle biology and relevant City of Eugene Parks and <br /> Open Space documents <br /> Schedule: November 2004 -December 2005 <br /> 2. Monitoring and volunteer monitoring plans <br /> A. FISH MO1vITORING <br /> Task 5 -Trap and measure fish at the Delta ponds outflow <br /> Contingent on the City acquiring and installing a specialized two-way trap, students will check the <br /> trap daily, collect information on all species found in the trap and release fish back into the pond. <br /> Schedule: October 2004 -June 2005 <br /> Product: Monthly (excel) spreadsheet with data totals <br /> <br /> Task 6 -Fish Seining <br /> Students will be trained by ODFW staff to conduct seining surveys at Delta Ponds. A minimum of <br /> 10 sample sites will be selected in accordance with ODFW criteria. Seining surveys will be <br /> conducted at each site twice -once during Winter and once during Spring. Additional seining will <br /> occur during high water flood events in the ponds nearest the Willamette River to learn more about <br /> the relationship between the ponds and the Willamette river. The schedule for "storm seining" is <br /> weather dependent and will be determined by ODFW stall: Seining nets, boats (if necessary) and <br /> chest waders will be provided by ODFW. The City may also contribute hip waders and boats. <br /> Schedule: January 2005 -May 2005 <br /> Product: Winter and Spring excel spread sheet with seining data <br /> <br />
