Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the F.M. Wilkins Shelter on
Summit Avenue at 9:30 a.m. to enjoy pastries, coffee and juice courtesy of the Eugene City
Bakery and the Friends of Hendricks Park before heading to the forest and trails.
Volunteers will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while
protecting the native plants of the forest. Ridding the forest of invasive weeds is one of the main
objectives of the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan. By removing the ivy and other
invasive plants, the native species have a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish in the
forest. Over the past two years, volunteers, contractors and park staff have cleared ivy from
about 10 acres of the park's forest. Following up with removal of re-sprouted roots through
these subsequent volunteer work parties is essential for maintaining the cleared areas.
Tools and equipment will be provided, and work clothes, rain gear and shoes, such as
long-sleeved shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes or boots, are recommended. The last two
volunteer work parties this winter are scheduled on Jan. 10 and Feb. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 1
p.m. For more information, call 682-5324, 607-4066 or visit www.friendsofhendrickspark.org.
###
