This was not always the case. ,
Until last spring, much less punishing activities were
causing significant and costly damage to Eugene's average 4 , 1.111.
court surface. ; r , .yore
;.}'fir f.. ...0.•'- c `.'IV
•When Parks staff initiated the biannual maintenance of IN lit
t"
Amazon Park tennis courts last spring, they were informed
by the contractor that the courts might not make it through --""
another season without cracking,which would require a total Z, - /
overhaul. Parks and Recreation staff researched more s-
•
durable alternative surfaces and eventually invested in a
suspended tile, permeable sports court surface that is better
able to weather shifts in the ground beneath the surface and
drain excess water. This more permanent, versatile surface
also provides a more cushioned, low-impact experience for tennis players and players of other court sports, including the
growing sport of roller hockey.
In September, dasher boards and professional-level goals were installed on two of the four tennis courts. The heavy
padding worn by roller hockey players tends to heat players quickly, making it a cool weather sport. Over the course of a
year, the two courts will double as a roller hockey rink during the cooler autumn and winter months and tennis courts
during the spring and summer.
"We are excited that we were able expand our facilities to accommodate more sports played in the community," says
Athletics Manager Dave Battaglia. "Already, there are pick-up games starting in the evenings, and they go on until the
lights turn off at 11 p.m." For more information about the roller hockey program, contact Dave Battaglia at 682-5212. For
more information about Amazon Park or the new sports courts, contact Park Amenities Supervisor Richard Zucker at 682-
4833.
MWMC Holds Informational Meeting on Regional Wastewater Facilities Planning
The Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC) is bringing together citizens to provide needed
perspectives and advice on planning for regional wastewater facilities that will serve current and future Eugene and
Springfield citizens through the year 2025.
