County Beat: Not busy Saturday?Try joining a planting party -The Register-Guard, Euge:... Page 2 of 2
McKenzie River Valley.
The remaining communities will receive their funds if they
submit proposals that meet the guidelines of the program.
Dunes City will use its $8,752 grant to help co-sponsor the
Rhododendron Festival in nearby Florence, erect new signs at
both ends of the city on Highway 101, do some general
cleanup in open-space areas, install cabinets in its community
center to display tourism brochures and refurbish its
information kiosk.
The grant amounts received by the other cities include:
Westfir, $6,200; Veneta, $5,915; Creswell, $9,258; Cottage
Grove, $18,962; Florence, $54,956; and $15,749 for the
McKenzie River Chamber of Commerce.
Funding for road repairs
up for discussion again
After failing to agree on just how much of Lane County's road
fund should be turned over to cities to keep potholes filled,
county and city officials will try again next week to come to a
meeting of the minds.
But how many fingers should be in the county's coffers is just
one of the items on the agenda.
The group also will talk about two other options for raising
money for road maintenance - levying a countywide local
option tax on both fuel and vehicle registrations.
During the last go-round, most of the smaller cities and Lane
County didn't want to go that route. Soon after, Eugene and
Springfield both started their own campaigns to impose fuel
taxes. They - and Cottage Grove - imposed 3-cent-per-gallon
taxes that went into effect in August.
The Eugene council adopted a "transportation system
maintenance fee" but repealed it after opponents launched a
petition drive to repeal it.
The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room 102 of Building
19 on the Lane Community College Campus at 4000 E. 30th
Ave., near its intersection with the Interstate 5 freeway.
