Consider heading over to the Lane County <br /> Fairgrounds to help plant native trees, shrubs and grasses <br /> along Amazon Creek. <br /> Fairgrounds manager Warren Wong said the project not only <br /> will return the banks of the creek to something more like their <br /> historic appearance, but also "simultaneously remove non- <br /> native, invasive vegetation." <br /> "Further, the trees will act as a visual buffer for neighbors <br /> residing south of the fairgrounds property," Wong said. <br /> The project has the support of the city of Eugene's Stream <br /> Team, the Jefferson Westside Neighbors and the Lane County <br /> Fair Board. <br /> Eventually, the plants will line the creek the full length of the <br /> fairgrounds. <br /> Would-be volunteers may call Lorna Baldwin at 682-4850 for <br /> more information. <br /> The planting will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. along the <br /> south end of the fairgrounds at 796 W. 13th Ave. in Eugene. <br /> Small cities get <br /> grants for tourism <br /> The county commissioners have approved the plans of six of <br /> Lane County's smaller cities to use their share of $152,000 in <br /> annual rural tourism marketing grants, aimed at attracting <br /> visitors to their communities next year. <br /> So far, Florence, Westfir, Dunes City, Cottage Grove, Creswell <br /> and Veneta have submitted descriptions of their tourism <br /> projects and signed contracts, prerequisites to receiving the <br /> funds. <br /> So has the McKenzie River Chamber of Commerce, one of the <br /> community groups that works to bolster tourism in the <br /> http://www.registerguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?name=c 1.cr.countybeat.1121&date=20C... 11/24/03 <br />
