ANNUAL INSPECTION
AMAZON CREEK CHANNEL IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT NO. 15-01
31 AUGUST 1993
1. DATE OF INSPECTION: 26 August 1993
2 . REFERENCE: LEVEE ENCROACHMENT STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES,
PDR 1130-2-5, 17 March 1980
3. SPONSOR: City of Eugene
4 . INSPECTION PARTICIPANTS:
John Todd, Inspector, CENPP-PE-DC, (503) 326-6491
Richard Zucker, Maintenance Supervisor, (503) 687-5271
Jack Long, Environmental Technician, (503) 687-5207
5. FINDINGS: The following inspection findings were noted:
a. Clearing of unwanted vegetation from the channel (lined
and unlined) and channel side slopes was noted at various sections
of the project. The City is continuing to conduct clearing
operations from the channel as an ongoing process. The City is
also working with environmental advocates to limit vegetation
removal to only that which is necessary to ensure the channel
capacity is not limited and unwanted vegetation will not result in
backwater. Brush and tree removal/thinning is recommended
downstream of 33rd and Hilyard Street; upstream of 31st and Hilyard
Street; downstream of 29th Avenue and upstream of 24th and Amazon
Parkway.
b. Sediment deposition was noted upstream and downstream of
bridges located at 24th, 29th, 30th, 31st, and 33rd Avenues. The
sediment will limit the capacity of channel in these areas.
c. Berry vines were noted on the right bank of the channel
side slope between Jefferson Street Bridge and Polk Street (approx.
2500 feet in length) . The vines restrict inspection of the channel
and create habitat for burrowing animals. This finding was noted
in the 1991 inspection report.
