r /
RECEIVED
BY CrY MANAGER
DJS RaJTED TO:
AUG 1 6 1994 YOR
August 15, 1994 WCC LL -E/L
GR ✓
T MGR
•
Jack Long gm'T , 7)
Environmental Programs Supervisor
Public Works-Maintenance
1820 Roosevelt Blvd.
Eugene, OR 97402
Dear Mr . Long:
Your letter to Southeast Neighbors, dated July 22, 1994,
regarding vegetation management along Amazon Creek gives
us great concern. We applaud your willingness to support
an alternative, low-impact management approach along the portion
of Amazon Creek south of Fox Hollow. However, we are alarmed
and angry about your decisions to abandon the proposal to
`redesign and enhance the section of the Creek between Fox
Hollow and Hilyard; and to destroy the habitat and visual
qualities of this section of the Creek .
We view these decisions as clear conflicts with the city's
implied interest to minimize impacts on wildlife and habitat.
We find them inconsistent with the entire of an Amazon "Creek . "
We have enjoyed walking and jogging along the Amazon Creek
north of Fox Hollow as have many of our neighbors . We
particulary enjoyed seeing the beaver dams and even a glimpse
of the beaver itself. We liked seeing all the ducks that
used the beaver 's pond and hearing the frogs that lived there,
too.
Now, thanks to the city maintenance crews, those amenities
are gone . The walking/jogging trail has tire ruts in it from
the heavy equipment the maintenance crew used to destroy
the beaver, duck and frog habitat . Our walks along the
"Creek" are not as pleasant and we are disillusioned .
Our pride in our community is diminished . We no longer
can brag to friends and relatives about a quality of life
in our city and neighborhood which is high enough to support
beaver habitat in an urban area .
It is clear from the city's actions to remove the beaver
dams that the professed sensitivity to habitat and wildlife
is limited . The primary objective is to maintain a stormwater
ditch .
