WAYNE MORSE RANCH
Observations and Suggestions
August 1989
Lucy Skjelstad, Director,
Horner Museum,
Oregon State University
Build ingz wad Grounds
Observations:
Morse Ranch buildings and grounds are currently adaptively
used, apparently in keeping with original intent of the bequest,
preserving the ambience and appearance of the home and
surroundings.
Use appears to be generally not destructive of the historic
aspects of the house and grounds.
• One additional building, a picnic shelter, has been built.
Architecturally, it is a good fit with the original period structures; it
is not incongruous and, presumably, could be removed if the grounds
were ever reverted to a state of 'pure' historic integrity.
Recommendations:
Use is appropriate. The setting is particularly attractive and
could, perhaps be much more heavily used than it is.
Heavy use or overuse, however, might begin to contribute to
damage from normal wear and tear or more deliberate vandalism. It
seems that it would be wise to consider this ahead of time and plan
to balance maximum public use, and the degree to which use
promotes awareness of Senator Morse's contributions, with potential
problems from overuse.
A close look at, and periodic review of, the terms under which
the property came into public hands would assist in wise planning
and-protection, so as to maximize this rather precious property.
I
•
