Visual surveys for bullfrogs will be conducted concurrently with visual surveys for
turtles.
Fence monitoring. The condition of the fence around the turtle habitat areas will be monitored
annually by volunteers. Openings in the fence large enough to permit passage of people or predators
such as cats and dogs will be reported to PWM.
Water quality monitoring. (MEDIUM) The water of the pond and of Spring Creek upstream of the
pond will be tested every 5 years beginning in 1997 to determine if water quality is being degraded by
pollutants that could be harmful to the turtle population. The analysis in 1997 will provide baseline
data for comparison with future analyses.
(City already funded to do water quality testing? Check with Deborah Evans.)
Vegetation monitoring - plantings. (LOW) Plantings for habitat improvement will be monitored by
volunteers to assure good survival. Planted stock will be examined for vigor, drought stress and animal
damage (e.g., beavers). Monitoring will occur every 2 weeks during the first and second summers
following planting from early June to early September. The site will also be monitored for invasive
vegetation
Vegetation monitoring - invasive plants. (MEDIUM) The entire turtle preserve will be monitored
every 2 years for invasive plants that could impact habitat quality. Monitoring will be done by a
qualified botanist or trained volunteer. Target species will include purple loosestrife (Lythrum
salicaria), Eurasian water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum), Himalayan blackberry (Rubus discolor),
Scot's broom (Cytisus scoparius). Designated turtle nesting habitat areas will be monitored for
invading woody vegetation. In addition these areas will be checked to make sure that herbaceous
vegetation is mowed often enough to prevent excessive shading.
•
Other species?
Destination for reports. All monitoring projects should be recorded on a data sheet, listing date,
persons involved, tasks accomplished, and other observations.
