•
SALIx ASSOCIATES FEBRUARY 1997
Signage
Three types of signage will be needed on the site,as follows:
1. Environmental education
a. Purpose of preserve:unique, breeding population of western pond turtles
b. Turtle life cycle
c. Do not release any aquarium turtles,or transplant fish or other animals into this system;fish,
bullfrogs and other animals prey on baby turtles;domestic turtles have diseases that could
harm this population
2. Fishing regulations
a. Fishing in middle section only: do not cast near or beyond floating log booms
b. Lures only:no bait(which might attract a turtle)
c. What to do if you hook a turtle
3. Special site,special rules
a. Absolutely no dogs off leash
b. No motorized vehicles on pond(includes remote control)
c. Access restrictions: turtle nesting and resting area Do not disturb:
VIII. Monitoring
Monitoring is desirable for maintaining accurate biological data on the turtle population, particularly to
identify changes in size or age structure, and continued success in nesting and recruitment of new juveniles
into the population. If possible, monitoring of in or out-migration should be pursued.
Secondly, monitoring is intended to identify needs for maintenance of habitat features or structures which
might affect the well-being of the turtle population and other wildlife on the site.
(Put these into table format.)
Population Surveys. Turtle population surveys will be conducted every 3 years to determine
population trend (whether increasing or decreasing) and size and age structure. The surveys will be
coordinated and the results analyzed by ODFW. Information about size and age structure will indicate
if successful reproduction is occurring. Turtles will be trapped, weighed and measured, and released.
Annual visual surveys (2-3 visits per year) will be conducted by volunteers trained by ODFW, to
evaluate population size and approximate size/age classes.
Are visual surveys sufficient for population surveys? Would they be necessary supplements to
trapping or is trapping sufficient? Do we need additional detail about the protocol or is it
sufficient to say ODFW will coordinate it?
Nest monitoring. Nesting areas will be monitored each year to attempt to locate nests and determine
success, by volunteers under the direction of ODFW. Predator exclosures will be installed, checked
and repaired if necessary.
SPRING CREEK TURTLE PRESERVE HABITAT MANAGEMENT PLAN P. 11
