Letters in the Editor's Mailbag -The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, USA Page 2 of 6
Cottage Grove
Troops appreciate letters
The prayers and support of members of the Eugene-Springfield
community for the soldiers serving in Iraq have been gratefully
appreciated. I was born and raised in Eugene, and it holds a
special place in my heart.
I am currently commanding the 515th Transportation Company
based out of Germany. We have been deployed to Kuwait and
Iraq since mid-February. I have 150 soldiers who have
received hundreds of letters from schools in Lane County. I
can't express in words the impact these letters have had on my
soldiers - words like "brave," "courageous," and "hero" are
used repeatedly to describe my soldiers. My special
appreciation to the kids in Darci Stuller's class in Marcola and
the students at St. Paul's Catholic School in Eugene.
My soldiers treasure these letters and are making efforts to
respond to each one. It means a great deal to them that Lane
County has adopted the 515th Transportation Company. We
are committed to serving you and our country and are eager to
return to our families as soon as possible. Please feel free to
send letters to the 515th Transportation Company: Any
Soldier, 181st Transportation Battalion, 515th Transportation
(1., Company (WCNBYI), APO AE 09303-1740. We appreciate
people's continued support and prayers. God bless America.
Capt. EMILY B. HOLCOMB
515th Transportation Company
I
U.S. Army
Iraq
*park honors King's memory
I continue to be amazed by the lack of any recognition of a
memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. that has existed in Eugene
for many years. Even the City Council member who represents
the area where this memorial is located has never, to the best
of my recollection, mentioned its existence during this on-
going discussion. The Eugene Parks Department has not
mentioned the park, either.
But, if you go west on 11th Avenue, take a right on Hayes or
Grant streets and proceed to 10th Avenue, you will find the
Martin Luther King Jr. Park. It is bordered by Ninth and 10th
(11., avenues between Hayes and Grant.
On the same subject, I would like to recommend naming the
http://www.registerguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?name=ed.letters.0601&date=20030601 6/4/03
