About 75 people enjoyed
displays by GI Joe's, Oregon River Sports, City of Eugene
River House, University of Oregon Outdoor Program, and Lane , .` `' -
County Search and Rescue and gathered for presentations by
City officials, Glen Love of McKenzie Fly Fishers, Jeff Ziller of
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Gabe O'Campo of
the Northwest Steeiheaders, all key stakeholders in the design
and construction of the boat launch. Following the formal
dedication proceedings, two dozen people donned life jackets
and floated the river in canoes, drift boats, rafts, and kayaks.
Register-Guard Reporter Ben Fuchs jumped aboard a drift boat and was inspired to write an article about the boat launch
and dedication.
The vision for a new boat launch in the park was first conceived in 1997 in the West Alton Baker Park plan, after an
informal gravel launch was discontinued in the eastern section of the park in 1996 and the local boating community
lobbied for a replacement. The vision became a reality when voters approved a $25.3 million parks and open space
bond measure in 1998. Construction began last summer, and the launch opened for public use in late November 2002.
The boat launch is located off Day Island Road, across from the Cuthbert Amphitheater. The old restroom building, which was built in 1974, was demolished in February so that a new,
more efficient, ADA-accessible and easily maintained facility could be built at the popular metropolitan park. The old
restroom was in need of significant renovation and repair, and city Facilities staff decided it was more cost-effective to
build a new, more modem facility than to repair the existing one. One of the features of the new floor plan is an
expanded utility room, which will facilitate the work of parks maintenance crews at the site. The new restrooms are
surrounded by new landscaping and pervious pavement that eliminates the standing water problem near the restroom
and reconstructed planters and nearby paving.
The park shelters have also been improved. The columns on the shelters were recently reinforced and the roofs are
scheduled to be painted green in August or September to match the restroom roof. For more information about the
construction, call Facility Project Manager Allan Stockier at 682-6626. For more information about these park facilities,
call Park Amenities Supervisor Eric Johnson at 682-4904.
Amazon Appreciation Day this Saturday  : . ;
Community members are invited to cleanup and care
for Amazon Creek at the 12th Annual Amazon
Appreciation Day this Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m.
to noon.
