made the effort possible by supporting the project.
A previous year's"Trees for Concrete" project at 3rd Avenue and Lawrence Street received a statewide award for the
best civic organization project from Oregon Community Trees, the state urban forestry council, at its annual conference
early March. In addition to enhancing the beauty of the area, creating more natural areas in urban areas improves
water quality by reducing stormwater run-off into rivers and streams. The award, which was presented at the association's annual conference on
March 21, is for"quality...asphalt pavement construction on a special project" and specifically recognizes the work of
general contractor Morse Brothers, Project Manager Teri Higgins, Project Inspector Ginger Perales, and Airfield
Supervisor Rich Weiss for his assistance in the extensive coordination requirements necessary to complete the project.
The project included removing and replacing three inches of asphaltic concrete around the terminal, between gates Al
and A5. Rehabilitation of the weathered pavement was needed to eliminate surface raveling that could cause loose
aggregate to be sucked into jet engines. Morse Brothers completed the project in three phases, each phase lasting one
week in August 2002. Phasing was used to minimize disruption to the commercial airlines. This project was technically
challenging because of the minimum slopes (less than 1%) allowed on aircraft ramps and the absolute requirement that
all areas of the ramp drain adequately. In addition, safety and security while working around active commercial aircraft
required everyone involved to be especially alert and proactive to potential issues.
