K-- t t7.
3/.2.? ,SPIIMIA
V A L
EUGENE ____ _. .,_. ..._ ._.. .... __ ...... ..
March 20, 2003
CONTACT:
• Therese Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-
4800
• Troy Kreger, NeighborWoods Coordinator, 953-2388 (cell), 682-4831 (office)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TREES WILL REPLACE CONCRETE ON WEST 5TH AVENUE THIS SATURDAY
This Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City of Eugene's NeighborWoods
Program and the Eugene Tree Foundation (ETF), in collaboration with area businesses,
property owners and residents, will transform a plain concrete sidewalk on West 5th Avenue,
between Lincoln and Charnelton streets, into a more inviting downtown vista at the sixth annual
Trees for Concrete event. Community members are welcome to help NeighborWoods and ETF
volunteers plant 25 new trees at the downtown site.
The purpose of the Trees for Concrete program is to create a more livable and green
downtown environment by excavating planting spaces and planting trees and flowers in portions
of concrete sidewalks in Eugene's urban core. The current site was identified by Urban Forestry
and ETF staff because it would provide a more appealing and gentle transition between a
residential area with many trees and the downtown commercial area. Area businesses, property
owners and residents made the effort possible by supporting the project.
Last year's Trees for Concrete project at 3rd and Lawrence received a statewide award
for the best civic organization project from Oregon Community Trees, the state urban forestry
council, at their annual conference in early March. In addition to enhancing the beauty of the
area, creating more natural areas in densely developed urban areas improves water quality by
reducing stormwater run-off into rivers and streams. For more information about this and other
NeighborWoods projects, call 682-4831 or 953-2388.
## #
