The "Trees for • -
Concrete" project, on West 5th Avenue between Lincoln and L
! i
Charnelton streets, began when the concrete crew removed large f +
blocks of concrete to create planting spaces and was completed by 15
volunteers working alongside City staff last Saturday for several hours
in the pouring rain to plant 25 new trees at the downtown site. The
event drew coverage from all three local television stations. '
The purpose of the"Trees for Concrete" program, now in its fifth "
season, is to create a more livable and green downtown environment ix lory I4,4
by excavating planting spaces and planting trees and flowers in i a
portions of concrete sidewalks in Eugene's urban core. The current
site was identified by Urban Forestry and ETF staff because it would ormurooyi
provide a more appealing and gentle transition between a residential
area with many trees and the densely developed downtown
^-ommercial area.
