Neighborhood Sing-a-long and Potluck Picnic
On Sunday, August 4, from 12:30 p.m.to 5:30 p.m., neighbors from the Far West Neighborhood and kids from the
Emerald Valley Boys and Girls Club will come together for a neighborhood sing-a-long and potluck picnic. The event,
part of National KidsDay, will be held at Westmoreland Community Center, 1545 West 22nd Avenue. The sing-a-long will
be led by members of the Eugene Peace Choir and the Bethel Temple Choir. At 1:30, Mayor Torrey will add his voice to
the harmony. For refreshments, organizers are asking participants to bring "comfort food"for a potluck.
National KidsDay was established in 2001 as a day to celebrate and honor America's children. The underlying message
of the event is that adults who spend meaningful time with kids fulfill one of the most basic needs in a child's healthy
development. In addition to the sing-a-long and potluck, there will be games, arts and crafts, and a carnival atmosphere
outside of the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls Club.
To register for the event, contact Val Rogers at 344-8931 or via e-mail (vrogers@peoplepc.com) or sign up at the Boys
and Girls Club at Westmoreland Community Center. The event is partially funded by the City's Neighborhood Matching
Grants program. For more information, please contact Beth Bridges, Planning and Development, at 682-5272 or via
ne landscape at Campbell Senior Center has been
maintained by Parks and Open Space crews for many years
About ten years ago, center and parks staff began to envision a ` _ .=P• '` .f 'x''r '`t
showcase landscape at the center. The vision gained •' ' .
momentum with several donations, including tulip bulbs from - a a . , s . ` *` +4 r
mulch for the flowerbeds, perennial plants from Rokey Nursery : ' 3.
•
and Johnson Brothers and Bloomers Nursery, rhododendron ..
transplants from Hendricks Park, large plexiglass planters from
Lane County, annuals for those planters from Pitcher Lane Growers, and, most recently, several planter bowls that were
salvaged from the Broadway opening project and are now in full bloom. The landscape crew began to rehabilitate
overgrown, declining areas, and the irrigation crew installed a watering system. As the landscape began to unfold,
volunteers pitched in and began helping plant and maintain the flowerbeds, as well as making planter boxes and frames
in the center's woodshop.
A few years ago, the center began hosting an annual spring social each April to raise money for ongoing efforts to
beautify the center.
"The help of parks staff and center volunteers has really made a difference at the center," says center program
supervisor Jeanne Seward-Wallberg. "The volunteers feel a real ownership in the center and continue to take pride in the
beauty created here."
Efforts to beautify the center landscape continue. Center volunteers and staff are currently working on funding to build a
rock retaining wall. For more information about this project, contact landscape lead worker Houston Sheppard at 682-
4825 or Campbell Senior Center manager Rita Kingsbury at 682-6392.
