The development and implementation of the ISO 14001-registered Environmental Management System in the Wastewater Division of the Public Work Department was recognized last week at the annual conference of the Oregon 'Association of Clean Water Agencies (ACWA). ACWA is a statewide organization of 75 local government wastewater treatment and surface water management agencies (www.oracwa.org). The Wastewater Division won the association's annual award in the "Outstanding Member Agency" category, for 'For strong leadership in environmental management and continuing efforts towards environmental protection. Parks and Open Space Bond Projects Keep on Rolling As Skyview Park nears completion, construction begins at Bethel Skatepark, Awbrey Park begins a park improvement process, and the Alton Baker Park boat launch goes to bid. All these projects are funded by the parks and open space bond measure approved by voters in 1998, According to construction manager Kevin Finney, Skyview Park '' 414 is 99.9% complete. The Florence-based firm is a design/build skatepark specialist which4:00•0 has constructed facilities across the country, most recently in )f300002 Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Airspeed tailored the design of the skatepark to reflect input gathered from a public meeting Skyview Park playground features innovative equipment attended by many Bethel area youth in June. The park is anticipated to be completed by mid-October. The Alton Baker boat ramp project went out to bid July 26. The bid closes August 16, and construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of October. The launch has been long anticipated by the local boating community as a replacement for the informal boat launch on the Willamette River that was closed in 1996. The new facility will include a concrete boat ramp and access road, parking for 12 boat trailers, lighting, landscaping, and irrigation. 'Eugene Outdoors'Due in Eugene Area Homes this Weekend The summer/fall issue of Eugene Outdoors, a publication of the Parks and Open Division, is due in homes this weekend. This issue features the Willamette River park system and includes articles about the history of the development of the riverfront park system and river restoration projects, as well as a map centerfold that highlights the many parks and open space areas along the river. The issue also includes articles about the upcoming leaf collection program, volunteer projects and tree care. Copies of the newsletter have been placed in today's City Council packet.
